Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect on my first visit?

On your first visit a detailed medical history will be recorded. This is followed by an examination of the tongue and palpation of the pulse. A brief physical examination may be conducted where appropriate. Based on the diagnosis an individual treatment strategy will be devised and discussed and a course of treatment started.

Are acupuncture needles clean?

The needles used are high quality pre-sterilised disposable needles, which are used only once and are immediately discarded after each treatment.

Is acupuncture painful?

The experience of being needled can vary from person to person. Needle sensations vary from not feeling the needles going in at all to feeling warmth, heaviness or tingling often followed by deep relaxation and a feeling of wellness.

How long will I need treatment?

The nature of the complaint will have a bearing on the amount of treatments needed. Generally speaking more recent disorders are more easily treated and more rapidly eliminated than ones that have been present for a number of years. Acupuncture is of benefit in both acute and chronic conditions. How well the patient keeps to the advice and instructions given by the practitioner can also influence the speed of the recovery.

Is Traditional Chinese Medicine a treatment that is suitable for everyone?

Yes. There are no limitations in terms of age, sex or condition. Pregnant women can also benefit greatly from treatment. Many people who are in good health also use Chinese medicine as a preventative treatment to remain healthy.

Do I need to believe in it for it to work?

No. While a positive state of mind helps with any form of treatment believing in it is not necessary as evidenced in clinical studies and in the successful treatment of children and animals who cannot be instructed to believe or understand the process.

What should I wear for treatment?

Just wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing that can be easily rolled up above your elbows and knees.

How do herbs differ from Western Medicine?

Chinese herbal formulas tend to be much gentler than Western medicines and work to not only help relieve symptoms, but to help return the body to balance, so that further herbs will not be needed. As the treatment continues herbs are often modified to meet the changing needs of the body.

Can I claim back with my health insurance?

Most major health insurance companies cover acupuncture treatments today. If you have questions regarding coverage, please contact your health insurance company. A receipt is provided after each visit to assist any future claims.
